  1. Final – Spring 2016 “Craft in America”
When I started to think about what to make for this course I wanted it to fit my inner struggles going on with me right now which I believe is an emotional and physical healing process. So after reading the about the architects in the early 1900’s I fell in love with the wood work of the inside of these structures. One in particular was the “Gamble” house that the Green’s (brothers pg. 50) constructed. I believe that I was attracted to these because of a fall I had recently down a set of steps so after researching these beautiful interiors I discovered this set that was in my dreams at night I could not let the image go. I do not have access to wood materials or equipment so I started out with drawing from a photo of the “Gamble” house stairs that I found on the internet. Then from that drawing I started constructing scraps of material in the shapes of the three different landings of this staircase in the appropriate colors. I machine sewed them onto a dark background and built it up with different colored materials. There is overlay of “see through” material to represent depth. This was extremely challenging and I have been influenced by Faith Ringgold because I would like to take the scraps from it and do a patch work style around the edges.
The second one came from the first one’s influence. After an anxiety attach at Christmas time I realize that some things that I thought were in the past was not. My art has been influenced by this and I have become extremely attracted to a very geometric style like Ruth Reeves on page 127. So to do this I turned to Spoonflower.com and took by “Staircase” art piece and started played with pattern. I have order a Satin finish 4 yards of this pattern to play with at my pleasure.
When I was in a Plein Air competition right before Spring Break I discovered a lot about myself and one of them was my experience with nature was something that has to a stay in my life. I wrote about this in our blog, but I felt like I needed to show the art piece that came from it. I was in a big field drawing early one morning with birds singing, bugs buzzing and even the cars driving by were few and far between. I wanted to capture the sun with the beautiful shadows on a bluebonnet field and I really into the process of drawing (pastels)what I was looking at when I realized the buzzing sound around my head (which I thought were bees) were humming birds and when I turned to look at them they (about 3) all stayed like they were watching me draw over my shoulder. I honestly got eyeball to eyeball with them I starting crying right on the spot overwhelmed with the thought that this is meaning of true happiness for me. So this one will probably turn into a pattern too, but more of a tapestry of colors (like Dorothy Liebe’s pg. 167) to show the spiritual side of healing.
Experimentation and growth is represented in my last art piece I was so influenced by the wool that Sheila Hicks “Grand Hieroglyph” on pg. 264 used that I wanted to try a simple form it. Now mine is not a tapestry (which I have ordered a loom and I am going to try to learn a simple form of weaving) but it is a dry form of felting. I was at my school really early on a Sunday morning when I discovered these lovely geese visiting and they were very kind to stay still long enough for me to sketch and take a few phone pictures. I went home to discover a bag of wool (that I asked my daughter for ( my grandchildren show sheep) to save for me) and with that and few scraps of wool that I had, I made this little art piece on muslin with a dry felting process.

  3. I love love LOVE how the stairs started on the quilt, and I too loved that house, and how you repeated that pattern on spoonflower.com. The progression of influences and materials is not evident at first, but when I looked back, I can see the design. Thanks for sharing!
