A grown man cried tonight.

Catastrophe.  Of the highest. F#%*ing. Order.

My wife is asleep and it's too late to call anyone, so I'm going to vent to y'all instead.  I just ruined my project.  Over 100 hours of work...poof.  Like they never happened.  I was working with concrete, and a beautiful slab of black ash wood that I have been planing by hand, and sanding and chiseling for weeks.  There was a rupture.  It was bad.  And then it got worse.

I'll post pictures as soon as I'm not too upset to think straight.  I know I can salvage some of it, but it won't be what I wanted, what I've been working towards for, weeks.  I feel like throwing a tantrum.  Thank you for listening.  Now, I'm going to bed.  To cry into my pillow.

P.s. I'm not really going to cry, but I thought about it.

  1. Post picture ...so much of the reading for this class was based on attempts to do something different. The final project was never intended to be about " a piece" but a document of the journey.

  2. Tyler my heart is aching for you. I'm still very excited to see it, understanding the work you put into it. I have really enjoyed you this semester and your comments especially. I hope to see you this summer in person!

  5. Tyler post pictures! A process for sure and will also portray the emotional involvement to a piece.

Susan- please leave avoid passive "comments" out of the blog when students are open to not only share positives, but criticism to help us grow. This is a craft class, which is art that encompassed meticulous time. "Craft" and the definitions and interpretations has been the basis of this entire class and what was expected to be reflected in the final. We take what we learn and use it to inspire a new work of art so we can grow. From what I have seen in your past posts- your art portrayed did not change from what we have read all semester, but has potential to reflect growth from what other students have posted to collaborate from.

  6. Sarah, You may have misunderstood my comment which was only supportive of Tyler and encouraging him to post images. However that being said, I do feel as if I am being ganged up upon when voicing my opinion here.I am always open to constructive feedback but not being attacked.

  8. Agree to disagree- however, nothing has been said as an attack. Just an open conversation to talk about art and each personal opinion on work.

  9. Tyler post up picks! Like others have said, maybe a fresh view on it will allow you to turn it into something new, unplanned, and beautiful.

  11. Thanks, y'all. I regret posting this last night, because now that I've calmed down a little this seems a bit melodramatic, but I was amazingly upset. Everything was going perfectly, and I was nearly done, and then I did something stupid without thinking and just brought the whole thing down. If I had thought for more than a second about what I was doing I could have avoided a catastrophic failure and had a nice, finished piece sitting in my garage right now. I'm still upset with myself, but I'll be able to pull something out of the wreckage. I will post pictures tonight or tomorrow morning so I can show my piece together with the process photos and the photos of the revenge that the universe had planned for me for some unknown slight I inflicted upon it.

I would like to say that I will have a finished piece by tomorrow, but I don't want to slap a band aid on this bullet wound and call it good if I have a chance of fixing this whole mess and eventually having something that I'm proud of and actually reflects the amount of work and thought that I've put into its making. We'll see how it goes, I guess.

  12. I know it is east to say and hard to do but, don't beat yourself up Tyler. I know the feeling, if not to a lesser degree but likely with more frequency. Nothing like trimming a bowl or cup only to go too thin and punch a whole right through the damn thing. It is good to fail. It means you are pushing yourself. You can't find your limits without doing so.

  13. Tyler, you tried and you pushed yourself, that is what the semester was about...rethinking, re-doing, re- making. REALLY. Post what you have. It is important to know try again, I am not interested in folks who always say they succeed. James Watkins has fired pieces up to 5 times...or more. Just keep going.

  14. Tyler - my heart goes out to you! I agree ... sometimes our frustrations bring about greater moments and movement towards something positive in the studio... hang in there!
